Author Guidelines

The editors of Simbolismo: Signs, Identities, Meanings encourage original contributions that offer a mixture of pedagogical, methodological, practical, epistemological, theoretical, creative, or artistic insights about a topic of interest in one’s discipline (e.g., education, communication, arts, literature, social sciences, the humanities, and other intersecting disciplines) driven by semiotics or sign systems as a lens so that new, emerging, or subjugated knowledge comes to the fore in a more creative, artistic, unorthodox, yet critical way. We highly encourage qualitative research submissions in which creative work or creative imagination and lived experience have so much weight and bearing in meaning-making and knowledge creation.

  • Original research articles that utilize semiotics as a theoretical or methodological framework should strictly follow the number of words that is between 8,000 and 10,000 words (excluding abstracts, references, tables, and figures). Figures can come in the form of images or photos, illustrations, graphs, and other visuals such as sketches, drawings, and paintings.
  • Literary attempts in the forms of poems and short stories must not exceed the word count, too (500-800 words for poems; 1,500-2,500 words for short stories). Poems and short stories should be written in English. For readability and a wider reach, submissions in Filipino, Cebuano, or any other language in the Philippines or elsewhere in the world must have a corresponding English translation by a professional translator. Poems, short stories, and other creative works must be original and not published elsewhere online or in print.
  • Visual arts such as paintings, drawings, or sketches are accepted in the journal; however, the artist is required to provide a 100-word blurb that explains the essence of the artwork. Artwork must be original and not published in any other journal or other publications online or in print.
  • Authors must closely follow the recommended style sheet for all submissions and use this sheet as a template Simbolismo Style Sheet
  • The first page of the manuscript must be a title page showing the full title of the article, and a 250-word abstract with a maximum of 5 keywords. Submitted manuscripts must be de-identified.
  • On a separate sheet, write a 100-word biographical note for each author. This must be uploaded separately onto the submission site labelled as the author’s biography.
  • All submissions undergo a double-blind peer review.
  • Publications in Simbolismo: Signs, Identities, Meanings are biannual; one in June and another in December of each year.
  • All publications are open access, and Simbolismo: Signs, Identities, Meanings does NOT ask any amount for a publication fee. Please report any experience of phishing and scams asking you to send payment to Simbolismo. Email: editor@simbolismo.org

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • Authors are encouraged to register to Simbolismo: Signs, Identities, Meanings here when submitting a manuscript or visual artwork for review. Please use a regular email and indicate your full name and affiliation when registering for the journal.
  • On the submission page, please de-identify yourself when submitting an article, artwork, or any other creative work for peer review. Remove your name, email, contact number, affiliations, and any other identifiable personal information in the citations and references. When citing yourself in text, use this example (Author, A., 2021). Do the same in the references. Please take note that this journal recommends using the APA 7th edition citation and referencing style.
  • Include all figures and tables in the main manuscript being submitted. For conciseness, coherence, and cohesion, we do not allow authors to submit figures (e.g., images, sketches, drawings) and tables separately. At the same time, we do not recommend putting all tables and figures at the end of the manuscript.
  • All submitted manuscripts undergo a blind peer review of at least two (2) independent reviewers.
  • All submitted manuscripts that are products of AI will be automatically rejected. Academic integrity must be observed when submitting articles and visual artwork to the journal. All submissions must be original products of authors as human beings, not by AI.
  • We cultivate a proactive and supportive culture in the review process. We will act as mentors supporting writers in the review process. However, we do not compromise quality and originality of work.
